I was shocked by the checkout lady’s behaviour at the supermarket the other day.
I was waiting in line, listening to the comments she was making to the man in front of me as she scanned his items. (Yes! I plead guilty to eavesdropping 😉)
She was making personal comments… Giving him unsolicited advice…
It all seemed a bit much. I mean, the poor guy only wanted to pay for his shopping.
Then, once he’d paid, he gave her a hug. And said “Love you Mum!” before he walked off.
It just goes to show how our interpretation of a situation can be wrong because of the assumptions we make.
And not just slightly wrong… Sometimes clarifying things shifts our reaction through a full 180 degrees.
It’s not like discovering what was really going on moved me from thinking mum’s advice was unacceptable to grudgingly acknowledging that it’s ok. It transformed the interaction into a lovely little moment that lifted my day.
